I heard the HS will be over 1500 next year. Enrollment hasn't been that high in over 10 years. Any truth to this? Any chance of us moving up to 5A Division I?

Enrollment was up this year.....just under 1,500. I think it was 1,480....I'd have to look it up to be sure.
I haven't heard too much. But the senior class this year isn't huge.... the current 8th grade class is pretty good size from what I hear....so it wouldn't take much to push it over 1,500.
I think 2011...maybe 2012 was the last time it was over 1,500. So that's a good thing to see.
As far as moving up to 5A Division I.... it's not happening. The cutoff is 1,924 and up. Only three schools in all of East Texas make that cut: Longview, Tyler, and Lufkin.
Texas High dropped to Div II back in 2020....and it's pretty unlikely they will ever return and they have an enrollment over 1,700. Same with Nac.
Historically.... MHS has had an enrollment around 1,700 dating back to the 1970's (after integration).
For some reason...back in the late 90's there was a baby boom that had enrollment at 1,980. I think it was in 1996. That was unusually high for MHS...but it only lasted to alignments.
We went back to 1,700 in the early 2000's....but then we saw some white flight to Hallsville and Elysian Fields. That seems to have slowed in the lsdt few years ... but it looks like 1500 will be our new normal unless we can recover that 200 or so we've lost.
TBH....I prefer Div II..... all of our district rivals are local: Hallsville, Pine Tree, Mount Pleasant, Texas High, Whitehouse, Nac......
Division I..... you lose the longtime rivalries..... and you end up with teams like McKinney North, Mesquite, Forney..... *yawn*
I kind of like where we are now IMHO.

People are finding out Hallsville isn't as perfect as they thought it was going to be.

If the Fish Camp meeting for next year's freshmen is any indication... the incoming class is going to a big one.
Wouldn't take much to push MHS back over the 1500 mark.
Ultimately.....if we could land back in the 1700 range.... that's where we've historically been for the last 40-50 years.
