We have got to have the worst sports coverage of any newspaper in the state of Texas. Longview has an article almost every day about the Lobos. Marshall got a tiny little blurb. We could be discussing returning players, newcomers, bright spots, weak spots, expectations. We could have stories on the offensive scheme, defense. Hell even an article about some of the coaching staff. Nope. We can't have none of that. But we will get 17 articles about Hallsville and the 7 year old dixie team or their jump rope team. The only articles they have with any meat on them are copy and pasted from ETBU's twitter. I'm not even sure we have a sports person anymore. I guess they are letting the paperboys do the reporting now. We use to have the best coverage around. Three or four articles a week or more. We are lucky to get one a week these days. But you can count on some things being copied and pasted about Longview or Pine Tree in our paper. Lazy reporting and lazy editing. May as well change the name of the paper or close up shop. The Marshall News Messenger is a mess when it comes to sports.

"Marshall News Mess-injure" It's more like the Hallsville News Messenger. Or Longview Lite News paper. At least in the sports section. Maybe we don't have a local sports person anymore. I would be embarrassed to claim the job if I was putting out as little information as they are. |

I'm hopeful it will be better this season.
We should get at least one article before the game and at least two afterwards. It use to be 3 and 2.
Wednesday- Defensive write-up
Thursday0 Offensive write-up
Friday- Pre game; History, predictions, match-ups, importance as far as district race, etc
Saturday- game recap
Sunday- Stats; Grade the team in the win or the loss; looking ahead at the following week
Those were great times. Newspaper business is different nowadays.
But Like I said....I'm hopeful. Going to give them benefit of the doubt!

I’ve written the sports guy and the editor of the paper about the lack of sports coverage for MISD athletics. I never got a response from either of them. Not sure the sports editor even knows sports, during the high school baseball season he always called runs points rather than runs. Marshall athletes and coaches put in a lot of practice hours and deserve better coverage from the Marshall News Messenger. The Panola Watchman has one sports guy and he has numerous articles about Carthage Isd athletics during a week.

There are no stats nor coaches interview. The coaches and players are there Saturday morning and the coaches are also in the afternoon. That was one of the more exciting games you will see this year but you would not know it from the article.

Three days until the second longest rivalry series game in the State of Texas, and the biggest test of the year for the MAVERICKS and what do we get from the News Mess-injure, ..........CRICKETS !!!!!
We can Look in the Longview News Journal on Saturday morning to learn about the Lobo Vs. Mavericks game. MNM won't report on it until next Tuesday. They will probably just reprint the article from the Longview Paper |

The Marshall paper is on the same print schedule as the Longview paper.
There is absolutely no reason we should have to wait that long for our write up.
It's sad. Really sad.
We've had some great sports editors through the years..... they seemingly just don't care.

Again,... the News Mess-injure shows their inability or unwillingness to cover the Maverick Football team in real time.
Today they ran a 25 year old article about the Lobo-Maverick rivalry. The story originally published in 1997 has nothing to do with the game that will be played this coming Friday night. Several of the people mentioned in the article are now deceased, and none of the players on either team were even born when the article was written.
LAZY or INCOMPETENT !!! Who knows? Definitely a Disgrace in either case !!!!

I think it is definitely The Hallsville News Messenger !!! Instead of writing an original article about the Mavericks-Lobo game the reprinted the article written by the Longview Sports Reporter. and where was the Marshall sports reporter last friday night? He was in Henderson covering the Hallsville Bobcat-Henderson Lions game>

I got ahold of the News Messenger today and their editor informed me that the newspaper has been out of a sports editor for the entire football season and that is why coverage has been lacking. The other newspapers like Longview and Tyler still have their sports editors hence why they have more coverage. She also said that if the school district or community wants to send in photos and info from the games they would love to run it, and also that anyone interested in applying for the sports position is welcome to. Contact I was given was news@marshallnewsmessenger.com to send in information.

I love my hometown. And the MNM has been my source of keeping up for many years. But this has been so disappointing.

I think we also need to remember that the Marshall paper is run by Marshall people, and so are the reporters, they’re local and they care about what’s happening. No one’s lazy, they just don’t have someone to do that job at the moment. If you’re already writing articles and taking pictures why not send them to the paper? Since you’re doing the job already. No one is intentionally ignoring Marshall football. |

Here we go again, it’s Tuesday and there was no article about the Mavericks game last Friday. The sports editor was there and I had a buddy that took pictures for the Mess. He wasn’t able to watch the 2nd half because he had to edit his pictures. No pictures in Saturday morning paper. There were articles about Jefferson and Hallsville games played Thursday in the Saturday paper. There were pictures from the pep rally in the Tuesday paper. The Maverick players and coaches deserve better. I wonder what their excuse is this year? What a joke!
