MISD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jack Alvarez has announced his retirement. He will be replaced by assistant AD Jason Hammett,
Hammett served as assistant athletic director under Alvarez.
Alvarez lead the Mavericks to back to back runner up spots in district 8-5A behind district champion Texas High.
Hiring within will allow players to continue their relationships with the current staff without a complete turnover like was experienced in 2022 and 2019.
Marshall is expected by most to challenge Texarkana for the district championship in 2024 with a bevy of returning talent. Keeping offensive and defensive systems and staff in place will be an asset to success.
Coach Hammett takes over with 23 years of coaching experience. He is a graduate of West Texas A&M University. He is a former HFC at 6A Copperas Cove with stints in Corsicana, Ennis, and Burleson Centennial as an offensive coordinator.
Best of luck to Coach Alvarez in his new adventure.
Congrats to Coach Hammett!!!!! Let’s go!!!!! We got some business ti take care of this fall!!

I think most of us were shocked he didn't leave back in October when he had his blow up. He's done some great things here and we appreciate it. But I like the idea of someone a little younger but with plenty of experience taking over. I can't imagine him making wholesale changes given the success we've had with this offense the last two seasons. With the exception of Longview and Carthage, no one really stopped us. We can only hope the rest of the staff will stay with the change at the top. No new staff and no new schemes will be massive for us going into next season. We need to find a quarterback and some offensive linemen that can hold a block. This is a good move. I hope it pays off for everyone involved.

It makes me nervous because the last time we promoted a guy from the staff we only won three games in two seasons. Seems like we would open it up to a statewide search. We are one of the top paying 5A jobs in the state, we will attract top notch coaches.

We've tried statewide searches and got big names and they NEVER stay. Too many coaches use 5A as a stepping stone to 6A or college football. Not to mention everyone wants to live in the suburbs of large cities. No one wants to live out in the country anymore. No one wants to be in East Texas when they could be in places like Frisco and Rockwall, and Mansfield. Same thing with the Houston suburbs and the Austin suburbs. It's going to be really hard or impossible to get people to move to and stay in places like East Texas, West Texas, South Texas. It's all about Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. We all knew Alvarez was close to retirement. We all knew Gredle had family in Austin. We all knew Mathis wanted to be back at Desoto or at least the Dallas area. Harper was the only one that had ties to the area and even he jumped ship to chase the money. The young guy before Harper was a nightmare and was completely the school board's fault. We should have been smarter and Rodney Southern would still be here. But we had terrible facilities and terrible pay when he was here and we didn't even try to make things better to keep him. We look like a dumpster fire changing coaches every 3 years. I guess we can hope with this one.

I don't think he was ready. And he was given a bit of a mess by his former boss. He never had a chance to win. Turned out he wasn't cut out to be a head football coach. He left Marshall and went to Prairieland where he snuggled there too. I don't even think he's coaching anymore. Coach Hamett has been a coach for over 20 years. I think Mavchamp said 23 years. He's got tons of experience and has been a head football coach too. Can't really compare the two.

Coach G can't be faulted for wanting to be closer to family. I'm still mad about Harper leaving. All those years he talked about how being the coach at his alma mater was his dream job and it was the only job he wanted from the beginning. He was building a winner too. Had a win over Longview and advanced to the third round of the playoffs. But he jumped ship and now he probably wishing he had stayed put now that Duncanville kicked him to the curb. He burned us big. We need to make this job as attractive as we can. Winning will solve 99% of our turnover problem. Carthage, Texarkana, and Longview prove that. Win and advance deep into the playoffs and people will stick around. Keep the pay at the top and that will help. We also need to keep improving facilites. We have become one of the best in East Texas. But we can still do more.

We need to figure out a few things
1. How to get guys that genuinely want to STAY. Guys that don't have aspirations for big ass schools in big as cities with their big as money. Find guys that like small towns. and want to be in a one high school town. Build a winner and become a legend. It's crazy to me that this is no longer the norm. It's all about moving up and hustling to bigger things. 2. Build a program. I realize we are really lucky. We are better than all the other teams in our district almost every season except for Texas High. But we need to take the next step which means deep playoff runs. That means not changing coaches every 3 years.
3. Pay among the best to get among the best.
4. I know we've done a ton of work on facilities, but there is more to be done. Maverick Stadium is still in dire need of more work.
5. Stop being yes men. We need coaches that will tell overbearing daddies, school board members, nosey boosters, or whoever to go F themselves if they try to meddle. Let the guy do what he needs to do without interference from ANYONE.
6. Stop cout chasing with coaches. Flashy names don't mean crap if they leave in 2 years.
7. Get rid of stupid games like Longview and Carthage where it's a blowout and get games you can win in preseason games.

I would hate to see us give up the Longview Game in favor of a game with Pinetree. Most 5A State Championship teams don't have a perfect 15-0 record. Almost all of them have at least one loss. The Lobos are not invincible !!! They have a winning tradition and a top calibur Coach, but they can be beaten... We have players with loads of talent, We just need a long term really smart Coach...

Marshall has beat us once in 20 years. Twice in 25. Tyler Legacy hasn't beaten us since 2004. Texas High, Hallsville, Sulphur Springs, Jacksonville, Whitehouse, Pine Tree have nto beaten us in over 40 years. Lufkin has won once in a decade. Tyler has had a couple of wins. No one in East Texas can even come close to beating us right now and that's not changing any time soon All the East Texas 5A schools are trending downward except for the Lobos. Out domination will continue for at least another 10-15 years if not more. Playing East Texas teams in predistrict is a waste of time for us. We need to stop playing Marshall, Tyler, Legacy, and Lufkin and concentrate on schools that make us better. And that's just the painful truth

This thead isnt about Longview. It's about our head coach and how we can get someone to take over and stay for the Long term. We need to build a winner and make them WANT to stay. Become the Carthage of 5A division ii. Who would leave any school if they thought they could build a powerhouse where they are already at. We need to build towards that.

I'm pretty excited about this hire. I think we will see the same offense we saw under Alvarez, but I think he will tweak it a bit. We got a little too predictable with Alvarez and that's what killed us when we played Mount Pleasant and Texas High. We have a lot of kids coming back that got really strong as the season wore on and the jv only lost one district game to Texas High.
I think the best part of the new coach is I don't think he will take as many risks that Alvarez did. I can think of 3 or 4 games that his poor decision making cost us the game. The Hallsville game in 2022 was totally on him. Going for it on 4th down on our own end of the field after we had the momentum and not running the clock out at the end of the game is why we lost to them. We lost the playoff game against Crandall because of him going for it on 4th down again and I'll never understand why we didn't even try to kick the field goal at the end of the game. Our time management was bad and we ended the game on the one yard line out of the endzone. That was completely on him. The hot mess game we had in mount pleasant might go down as one of the biggest meltdowns in Maverick history. We never should have lost that game. Total mess. And then in the playoff game this season when we were up 14-3 he went for it on 4th down from our own 30 was just stupid. We had total momentum in that game. I don't think we see any of that mess with the new guy.
I think we're in for a fun season this fall.

You can blame all those losses on the coach, but the reality was that the offensive line lost every single one of those games. Our offensive line play has been terrible for years and my guess is that it will continue to be bad with the new coach.

You're a coach, how about you give it a try?
