When is misd going to finally listen to parents and students that want the swim team to be reinstated? They don't even need to build a facility, they could just fix the pool at the lifecenter for a fraction of the cost. There's enough students to have a full swim team. We need to recruit a swim coach and get the pool up and running again. It's embarrassing that we let this fall away.

I can't imagine there being that many students interested in swimming. It would probably cost millions to get the life center running again and be close to the same to convert the city pool next to the high school into an indoor pool. That way it could be on campus. But spending millions for 10 students or less wouldn't make much financial sense. Maybe it could be a joint venture with the district and etbu. Maybe they have a swim team.

There are way more than 10 students that would participate in swimming. If the school district can fun programs that lose perpetually like soccer and tennis, then they can fund swimming too. How embarassing to be the only 5A school in east texas that not only doesn't have a team, doesn't have a facility because we have a perfectly good pool waiting to be used.

I don't know how many students participated in swimming when the team was still competing.... but they were pretty competitive. Sent several swimmers to the regional meets.
I honestly don't know what happned to make it all fall apart. Did the team lose to many or was it because Christus closed the indoor lifecenter pool? I have no idea. I'm not even sure that pool next to the HS is still in use.
I wouldn't be a cheap proposal to get a pool running again....no matter if it was lifecenter or Sam Birmingham pool.... but I agree.... if the interest is there, then MISD owes it to the students to at least explore it.
Like somwone said.... a joint venture maybe with the Boys and Girls club, Trinity Episcopal school (who has a team), the city, and ETBU.
I don't think ETBU has a swim team at this time though.
I'll do some investigating and see if I can get some info.....

The best thing without building something brand new would be for misd to acquire the city pool and build a metal building over it to make it indoor and heat the pool for winter use. Turn it into the maverick aquatic center and have it right there on campus. They could still operate it during the summer for public use. They could put garage -type doors on the side of the building to be opened for the summer. Close them for the winter when it's heated. Marshall is the only school in our district that does not have a pool and a team. We had one just a few years ago and we dropped the ball for these students.
