The 7 on 7 team didn't win a single game in Tyler. Looked pretty bad in all three games.
Lost to Hallsville then got blown out by Crandall then lost to Tyler Lee's B TEAM. B TEAM!
We were in a weak pool and we got dominated. QB play is just as bad as it was last summer in 7 on 7. Not seeing any improvement.
Bad QB play mixed with a new offensive system could be ugly this fall if they don't pull it together.
Team looks completely uninterested. Do they think they can just turn it on in August? Usually doesn't work that way.
Tyler, Longview and Carthage are going balls to the wall in 7 on 7. They will kick our tails if this is how it's going to be.
Didn't see much coaching staff in Tyler. Sure would like some positive news this summer. None coming so far.

I'm not seeing any accountability given by this staff. At least not in 7 on 7. Usually when we play poorly or seem uninterested, we have a head coach that gets the team together for a butt chewing or confidence boosting speech in between games. Maybe it's just me, but this staff has seemed uninterested in 7 on 7 results. Which is kind of weird, seeing how big he is into it. Just envisioned the staff being more vocal about it. I know we have a couple inexperienced qbs learning a new offense. That alone spells doom in 7 on 7. Luckily we have more time to learn and will be a run heavy team in the fall. Defense is learning a new system as well. Also had a couple starters missing. Montana Warren will be missed.

We've never been great at 7 on 7. I think we've only qualified for state maybe 3 times in 20+ years. We've gone winless in Tyler before too.
We had a couple of guys out. We're rotating quarterbacks. And at the end of the day we are a run first offense, not a pass first offense.
I don't see any reason to panic. This isn't really new to us. We've never been great at 7 on 7. Some years we didn't even compete in any tournaments.
No reason to panic.

IMHO....the reaction to 7 on 7 thus far is somewhere in the middle.
I don't think we need a full-on panic based on what's happening in 7 on 7.
But we can't completely ignore what we've seen either.
There's middle ground here.
------
As one poster already said.... we've never been very proficient at 7 on 7. I can think of only ONE season in the last 10-12 that we were even above average at it.... and that was 2018. Mostly because our head coach was a huge proponent of it... and also because that season we were most definitely a PASSING OFFENSE.
Historically... we just haven't ever been great at 7 on 7.... and it's had very little bearing on how our fall seasons have gone. Plenty of other teams are mediocre at it and have been fine..... Carthage and Longview come to mind immediately. They aren't 7 on 7 juggernauts by any stretch of the imagination and they are both highly respected when real football gets started.
All that being said.... we can't over look what we've observed thus far. The glaring issue being quarterback play. It seems we either don't know who our starting QB will be this fall.... OR... they are just working out the depth and who is QB1, QB2 and QB3. Two of them will likely be on varsity while the other will be on JV.
Why not use 7 on 7 to work that out?
Sure....I'd prefer to to QB1 get most of the snaps over the summer.... but between league play and the SQT's..... there is plenty of time for snaps.
------
Another thing to remember..... most years.... Marshall is NOT a passing team. We have been a running team with a passing THREAT for almost 40 years. There have been very few seasons we've been a PASSING team that used the running game when needed. It's always been the other way around.
Football in the fall will be much different once JQ and the rest of the backfield get into the game plan....which they aren't in 7 on 7.
The WR's and QB's will get better with time (we hope).
7 on 7 is generally about lots of tosses downfield... where we will be an offense of mostly shorter passes. That matters.
------
I can't say much about the coaches in 7 on 7 since I haven't made it to any of the games. But I've heard from all sorts of people about how this staff is coaching in drill and practice. They are hustling these guys. Teaching. WORKING them.
It sounds like they are really working these guys in to their mold for this fall. Nothing but positives I've heard. And tons of effort by the athletes.
Maybe that's not translating into 7 on 7. Maybe it's a different set of coaches.
I'm just taking a grain of salt with the 7 on 7. I always do..... every.... single...summer.
------
Still excited about this fall. I think we have the pieces to be a really good team.
We have some things to work on.....
but I absolutely do NOT agree that we are in trouble. Not based on ONE SQT.
JMHO.

To me its not that we went 0-3. Its not even the fact that both qbs struggled. What i am worried about is the lack of competitive fire and leadership from the players. NOBODY acted excited to be there. Nobody stepped up to be the voice of the team. They didnt care that they were getting beat by less talented teams and even a JV team. There was no urgency when we got behind or enthusiasm on the field or sideline. 7on7 success or lack thereof doesnt mean squat in the fall. But winning is contageous as is losing. This is the time to install a winning attitude. This is the time to build the team up and find out who will rise to the challenge. Leaders are born from competition and right now we dont have either.

I haven’t seen any 7 on 7 this year, so I can’t really comment on it. Obviously it’s disappointing. You want the guys to compete at a high level in all things.
Hate hearing about excitement/hustle/heart/leadership. That’s something that should be found in all activities.
But everything I’m hearing about workouts and time at the field house has been how hard everyone is working. Lots of hustle. Lots of instruction. Tons of positivity.

7 pn 7 team has improved every week this summer. Stop panicking. We've had a ton of guys out for skills camps and other types of football workouts. Not to mention we've been rotating quarterbacks almost ever possession. Trying to get all of them some valuable snaps. We are fine. We will be fine. 7 on 7 is great practice, but it's not football.

If we were mostly a passing team I'd be worried a lot. But Marshall has been a primary running team with just a serviceable offense for 30-40 years. Our offense is going to be built around getting the ball into the hands of our best runners. JQ Davis is a manchild. Having Bird and a couple of other guys out there will only make him better.
We don't need a quarterback that can thread a needle from 50-60 yards out on a consistent basis. We need a quarterback that's SMART and just an average passer. A game manager at quarterback. Passes of 10-20 yards will be out bread and butter to keep defenses from stacking the line on us. It's not about a prolific passing game..... just a smart and efficient passing game.
Take what the defense gives you. Shove it down their throat as much as you can and keep a reliable and smart passing game going to keep the defense honest.
That's what this offense will be about. And it's going to be fun to watch once it starts clicking.
