No reason we shouldn't win this one going away. Pine Tree is weak. But I'm a little worried about Hallsville, Texas High, and Whitehouse.
We've shown we cannot defend a screen pass to save our life. Every single team has had a field day on us with them.
We've also shown we are a one dimension offense. If a team shuts down our running game we have not shown we can depend on our passing game. Wide receivers drop perfect passes. The QB is completely immobile. And we have no deep passing threat at all. The small success we've had in the passing game has been on short passes when the receivers actually catch them. Every time we go deep it's either uncatchable or a jump ball that can be intercepted. Stick to the short passes. But our total reliance on the running game is a little worrisome. Longview and Carthage both completely shut us down. I know no one in our district is at Longview or Carthage's level, but it's still a problem. Maybe we need to rotate QB's like we did last year when Olvera was hurt. Seemed like we were pretty productive using Slone and Bird as QB's. Something needs to improve in the passing game. Not seeing much progression. On the brighter side... the third running back (Gatson?) looks really special.

This game should be over by halftime!
I agree that we've become totally one dimensional with the running game. The good news is that Hallsville and Whitehouse really don't have much defense. Texas High though is going to snuff that out in a hurry.
The passing game is a non-factor so far. The kid has a cannon for an arm. But his receivers can't catch a cold and most of the time he overthrows everything including the waterboy. No accuracy so far. Hopefully we can get that fixed. If we do we will be dangerous on offense. But right now it's all on Davis and Robinson to take us to victory.

This game should not be close!
I wouldn't judge the QB too harshly based on the Longview and Carthage games. He's getting better. He's not making major mistakes. He will come around.
NO ONE IN 8-5A HAS A DEFENSE LIKE LONGVIEW OR CARTHAGE.
But I do agree that we need to get the passing game going.....Im willing to bet we will see it more this week.

Well since my predictions have been less than stellar so far, I predict Mavs win Friday night by at least 7.

If we take care of business this game should be over by halftime.

True...Longview and Carthage had outstanding defenses. But we didn't produce through the air against Tyler or Henderson either. In my opinion WE NEED a passing game to compliment the running game in order to be successful. I don't think there is a single team that respects our passing game right now. Which means they will stack the box....which means they could potentially shut the run game down.

If we struggle this week we are in for a long season.
I think we ROLL.

With as many returning starters as we have on Defense, i was expecting a little more dominance. At least as good as last year. It's sad to see them take a little drop off with the new staff and scheme. I feel like we aren't as aggressive as we should be. It seems as though it's mostly a soft shell package that allows the underneath passes and certain more physical running games to excel. Our lbs are too good to not be all over the field forcing turnovers. If the soft shell isn't working, it's time to begin throwing different blitz packages at them. I guarantee it will bring about the turnovers. Which is key to beating the better offensive teams and giving your team momentum to feed off of. I understand giving your secondary extra help, but the best secondary is a Qb under pressure.

If we had him back our defense would be even better than it was last season.

The JV has turned it on the last couple of weeks. I wonder if they moved the freshman rb up to jv.?

Mavchamp, thanks for the writeup in the MNM, "Great Job!" Hopefully this isn't a one time deal. Being that I live in the Houston area, it definitely means a lot to have informed local coverage on the Mavs regularly. Thanks!

PS: It also means a lot to older local residents that don't frequent the internet. They just prefer picking up the MNM and read. Thanks!
