Thanks for getting the thread up and going Mavchamp!
The one thing Marshall has been missing is a BIG SIGNATURE PROGRAM WIN. We've only had a few in the last decade or so. I know the win over Longview in 2015 was big and so was the win over South Oak Cliff that year. I think the win over Nederland was big, especially with it being in Houston in 2018. All those district titles from 2015-2020 were great and all. But it's time for us to get a big PROGRAM WIN again. We can do this Friday, but we have got to play the best game of the year to do it. We can't come out flat like we did against Hallsville. I still cannot accept how we lost that game. It never should have come to that. Winning in Texarkana would be massive. We need it to not only get into the district title race, but stay in the race to host a playoff game. We do not want to have to travel to Dallas to face a metroplex school in their own stadium. Let's take care of business.
When was the last time we won in Texarkana? 2018? It's time to do it again. Defense will need to be ready for all that crazy passing. But our offense needs to come out firing on all cylinders. No turnovers. How many did we have against them last year? 7? And we had every chance in the world to beat them last year until we just fell apart offensively.

This isn't a must win game, but we should treat it as one. We lose and we drop to (4-4). We will be favored to beat Nac next week to likely be (5-4). Then we close on the road at Whitehouse, which won't be a sure thing. A (5-5) season would be a complete disaster with all the players we had coming back this year. I understand we have a new staff and new systems, but (5-5) is just a bad turn. Even if we win at Whitehouse and we finish (6-4) that's kind of disappointing in my book too. The only way this season can head into the playoffs with some shine on it is for Marshall to win out and finish (7-3). That loss to Hallsville is just

Literally no one was giving us a chance to win that game because that southern district was "so much better". Last win in Texarkana was in 2017.

That loss to Hallsville is just Hard to compare last season to this season record. Carthage was a huge add to the schedule. The only game that has rally gone sideways compared to last year is the Hallsville game. And yeah.... that one still stings. But everything is still in front of us right now. We can still win district. We can still host a playoff game We can still make the playoffs Those are the three things we started the season wanting. They are still there for the taking. Obviously a loss this week all but ends the district title talk.....and it will make hosting more difficult, but still not impossible if Whitehouse beats Hallsville. The Bobcats are favored...but their lack of a defense could come back to bite them if Whitehouse is firing off.

So you don't think a (5-5) or (6-4) season is disappointing?

So you don't think a (5-5) or (6-4) season is disappointing? Of course I do. But if we finish (6-4)....in the grand scheme of things...is only ONE game less than last year. That's with an entirely new staff.... a new offensive and defensive system. And a new QB. ANYONE that went to ALL of Marshall's games last year knew our offense sputtered more often than not. We were within a few seconds of losing to Mount Pleasant last season. Gotta give credit to Hallsville for being much improved this season. yes...I think we should have won. But it was a VERY similar game to last year's MP game. We were lucky last year. We were unlucky this year. Defense has struggled more this season than most of us thought they would. Particularly Vs. Carthage and Longview....but yeah.... against Hallsville too. Texas High going to be a handful too..... and I have a feeling Whitehouse will be too. We need our offense to take control of these final three games. If they do...it takes a LOT of pressure off the defense. But to answer your question....yes. 5-5 and 6-4 is disappointing. But I also expected some struggles this year with all the "new" we have going on. Get into the playoffs....and we've proven more than once....anything can happen.

I think anyone associated with Maverick football is happy with the direction we're headed. Coach Alvarez is going to bridge the gap from where we are to where we want to be. It's not going to happen overnight. But it's week 8 and we are still positioned to win a share of the district championship. So it's hard to complain. We still have a lot of work to do, but we're headed in the right direction. Winning this week would be a huge sign of things to come.

If he will stay in Marshall for more than 5 years, I think the odds are good we will have an athletic program that is recognized and respected statewide. If he stays longer, I see many district titles, and deep playoff runs, and perhaps another State Championship in the Maverick's future. I've been a Maverick fan for more than 65 years. I didn't play on the team. Mostly because 6ft tall boys weighing in at a whopping 115 lbs. didn't make the team back in the 1960's. So, I participated in the band. Not because I was a good musician, but because the band got to go to all of the games , Home and Away, for free. I've been praying for 50 years that a high caliber Head Coach would come along, one who who wanted to stay at MISD Long enough to build a championship program like I've seen at other schools. We have the talented players every year or two ,but we have not had consistent Coaching. I still say the players are 60% of the program success and the coaches are 40% of the program success. Just like Longview and Carthage, If the Coaching is here, Parents of talented players will move into the school district so their kids can play on a great team, for a great coach, and have a better chance of winning an athletic scholarship to a college they otherwise could not afford to attend. I'm just sayin'
